With a name that means "the place to embark," the Embarcadero is a very popular waterfront destination in San Francisco. Located along San Francisco Bay, the Embarcadero is adjacent to the Port of San Francisco and was a very rough area before clean-up efforts began in 1911.
In 1920, the Embarcadero became the location of the city's first produce district prior to its extensive redevelopment in 1950. Now a multi-use city center, the Embarcadero is the site for many of San Francisco's festivals. Adjacent to the Central Embarcadero Piers Historic District, the Embarcadero is also within walking distance of the new AT&T Park and the San Francisco Giants.
Until 1993, the Embarcadero's Ferry building headquartered the San Francisco Belt Railroad, which ran along the Embarcadero and into the Presidio. Presently, the Ferry Building is the location of the Muni F-Line transportation system, which includes historic streetcars, buses, electric trolleys and cable cars.
Today, the San Francisco Embarcadero Waterfront, including Rincon Park, the Audiffred Building and the Rail Museum, is an area rich with culture and history that must be included in any tour of San Francisco.
